An etching of a moth – Eudonia mercurella
I found this little moth clinging to the outside of a window one morning. The exquisite patterning on its tiny wings is clearly not enough to excite British lepidopterists into giving it a common name. Fortunately the Swedish have come to its rescue by naming it Molnugglemott or “Cloud Owl Moth”, which seems a much more fitting title for this print.
Eudonia mercurella is common and widespread across Europe and Asia as far East as China and as far South as Lebanon and North Africa. Its caterpillars feed on moss.
