Small Phoenix
Small Phoenix

A print of a moth – Small Phoenix, Ecliptopera silaceata

I was struck by the delicate tracery of white lines on the wings (which can be quite variable between individuals) and the shadowy patterns in the darker areas. This particular moth was a male, and he had his abdomen raised up emitting pheromones to attract a mate.

Small Phoenix is common throughout Britain. Its caterpillars feed on Rosebay Willowherb.
