A hand coloured etching of a butterfly - Meadow Brown, Maniola jurtina
The Meadow Brown is one of the most common and widespread butterflies in Britain. It is a frequent sight in the summer on the Isle of Arran, dancing in the dappled sunlight of a birch wood or flitting across grassy scrub by the shore. I found this particularly worn out and faded individual moribund on the road surface. It had spun its last pirouette in the whirlwind of a passing car. I picked it up and laid it to rest carefully in the undergrowth, having taken a picture to remember it by.
