A hand coloured etching of a moth - Small Purple and Gold, Pyrausta aurata.
This day-flying moth caught my eye many years ago in our garden in Oxford — a little glimpse of bright purple fluttering among the herb pots. It was tiny (about the size of a thumbnail) but exquisite, and was a tempting target for the brand new (at the time) macro lens on my camera!
The species is widespread across England and Southern Scotland. Its caterpillars feed on mint.
